DIY Lip Balm - Zero Waste Cartel

DIY Lip Balm

Are you always locked and loaded with lip balm?

Like, do you take it EVERYWHERE?

It might be because of the dry climate where I live, but I’m thrown into a state of panic every time I leave the house without it.

Yep I’m one of those people. I need my lip balm. All the time.

If you can relate to this obsession… you’ll find the following info on commercial lip balms shocking. And you’ll find the DIY version to be fun and useful. You can check out the video below.

The shocking truth about commercial lip balms.

The fair majority of corporate lip balms are still using petroleum jelly as their predominant ingredient.

Yuck!

Not only do they package this balm in a plastic tube, but it can be damaging for your health...

As Health Line states, here are the potential side effects of using petroleum jelly on your skin:

 * "Allergies: Some people are more sensitive and can develop allergies if they use petroleum-derived products. Always keep an eye out for irritations and adverse reactions when using a new product.

*  Infections: Not allowing the skin to dry or cleaning the skin properly before applying petroleum jelly can cause fungal or bacterial infections. A contaminated jar can also spread bacteria if you insert jelly vaginally.

*  Aspiration risks: Check with your doctor before using petroleum jelly around the nose area, especially in children. Inhaling mineral oils may cause aspiration pneumonia.

*  Clogged pores: Some people may break out when using petroleum jelly. Make sure you clean the skin properly before you apply the jelly to reduce the risk of breakouts.”

The safe, fun, and more effective DIY.

It's honestly so simple, you can make it while brushing your teeth.

This recipe includes Jojoba oil and Vitamin E oil, both great for soothing, hydrating and moisturizing your skin and lips.

We’ve also included coconut oil, which helps lock in the moisture so you can apply less frequently.

One last but important point: think of all those plastic tubes you’ll be saving by doing it yourself!

Here are the text instructions...

1. Bring water to boil
2. Place glass bowl over boiling water
3. Add 2 tsp coconut oil, 1 stop of wax (you can use vegan waxes of bees wax)
4. Stir until melted
5. Add 1tsp Jojoba oil, 1 tsp vitamin E oil (both optional but recommended)
6. For color: add a sprinkle of beetroot powder, choose your shade by the amount you add (will set lighter than it looks melted)
7. Stir until combined
8. Pour into your contain while melted (sets very quickly)
9. Stir in the container every now and then to stop the powder settling at the bottom

P.S. We are excited to announce that we’ve recently found this all natural lip and cheek tint… It’s smooth on the lips and smells like a fresh-cut grapefruit splashed with a little peppermint. Yum!
